Can Our Glasses Help You Slim Down? Actually, Yes.

In The Media

As weird as it sounds, research suggests that the use of blue light glasses may have some long-reaching effects that aren’t usually talked about.

This is NOT an Article About Weight Loss.

Okay, okay, okay. Let me start by saying this: I’ve tried every “trick” out there to lose weight. Some things work, some things don’t, and more often than not, some things leave you asking yourself why in the world you tried them in the first place (I’m talking to you, flat tummy tea). So I’m aware of how crazy the title of this article sounds, and I am in NO WAY telling you to go buy blue light glasses to slim down. At the end of the day, the only real weight loss solution is diet, exercise, and learning to be comfortable in your own skin.

However, this is true: blue light from our smartphones is one of the top reasons we don’t sleep the way we’re supposed to. See, back in the pre-smartphone era, when the biggest concern was how to get the latest Justin Timberlake track as your ringtone, blue light was not a problem. Screens were monochromatic and tiny, and all you could really do for fun on your phone was play “snake”. We listened to our music through CDs and watched TV on, well, TV. It was a more simple time.

Text messaging, social media, and smartphones changed all that. Soon, screens became bigger, brighter, and more colorful, and we began entertaining ourselves on our phones. Now, some experts say the average person spends over ¼ of their day looking at their phones. Of course, since we never use our phones while driving or at work😏, that means a lot of our time is spent on our phones while in bed, usually with a TV or some other screen on in the background.

Health Problems from Blue Light

This has created health problems that no one signed up for, but especially eye fatigue and sleep issues. See, the blue light from our smartphones’ screens actually fools our brain into producing less melatonin, the sleep hormone, at nighttime. As a result, we don’t sleep as deeply, and can end up tossing and turning for hours. Admit it- when you still read paperbacks before going to bed, you never had consistent problems with getting quality sleep like you have now.

The solution? THEBLUESPEC blue light-filtering glasses. Our glasses are designed to filter out the blue light from smartphone, laptop, and TV screens, allowing for more peaceful and comfortable sleep at night.

How Can This Help Me Slim Down?

Research states that lack of quality sleep is the biggest enemy to a waist midsection, and there are a few reasons why. For one, a lack of sleep dulls our decision-making by slowing down activity in the brain’s frontal lobe, which is the decision-making center of the brain. It also amps up the reward center of the brain. This produces an effect on our decisionmaking similar to being drunk- no junk food is safe. In other words, it might be easy to snack healthily when you’re wide-awake, but your brain actually rewards you for eating comfort food when you’re tired. Controlled studies have proven this effect time and time again, and one major review of 18 studies concluded that sleep loss led to high-carb, rich foods. Shout out to the carrot cake in my fridge.

As if those weren’t enough facts to make us feel terrible about our sleep habits, here’s more. Studies show that our metabolism gets snail-slow when we don’t sleep enough. Not sleeping enough releases cortisol, the stress hormone, into our bodies, and tells your body to hang on to its energy for the daytime. The result? Your body actually holds on to fat!

One study showed that when people cut back on sleep, they lost 55% less fat when compared to people with healthy sleep habits who ate the same meals as them, and they also felt less satisfied after eating those meals. To say it another way, sleeping more won’t necessarily help you burn extra fat, but you’ll certainly burn less fat when you don’t sleep.

The body never ceases to amaze me… and make me upset.
